Weekly Checklist 10/3/22

For Your Cultural Health:

There is only ONE class taking place right now on the history and culture of Ukraine, believe it or not, and it is happening before our very eyes at Yale. The teacher is Timothy Snyder. He is a Yale Professor. He is as gay and campy as they come. He is going to Ukraine and is teaching this class as we speak. I cannot recommend him him highly enough. He is on the sixth class and he speaks without lecture notes and breaks down issues to the atomic level, as in “What is history,” and “what makes a country.” Start with Lecture #1: Timothy Snyder: The Making of Modern Ukraine. Class 1: Ukrainian Questions Posed by Russian Invasion but it’s better than Netflix. I am dying this guy is my new hero. Do not miss this!

For Your Intellectual Health:

I am sure you have checked this guy out, but if you have not, you will not believe how elegant, brilliant and CUTE he is. Let’s hear it for Lex Fridman, a Russian-born American computer scientist and AI researcher at MIT who is more popularly known for his podcast and YouTube video series where he interviews a wide variety of guests including scientists, mathematicians, political commentators, authors, historians, philosophers, economists, and artists.

I have not learned so much as how to listen closely to the other person’s words as I have from him. I am also thrilled to share this podcast t with another huge crush I have on YouTube, Dr. Andrew Huberman, a neuroscientist who breaks down all the elements of the brain and a healthy lifestyle.

More Accessible Reading:

The whole point if you are trying to change your life is to do it in increments but also be consistent and reliable. You can do it in 2 minutes and start slow. Music. Diet, Love, procrastination. I use this with patients as there are often stories about why they can’t start because they will fail or why they can’t start because they don’t have the time or why they can’t start because it’s too big a mountain but the two min rule breaks those cognitive distortions and returns hope. I also use this with my ADHD clients.

We don’t often get to hear about narratives related to pop and mental health:

For anyone interested in the good uses and not abuses of Twitter, check out TherapyTwitter, the conversation is humane and very fascinating and deep deep deep and you will see how some therapists think out loud. My favorites are Jonathan Shedler and Nadeem Hasan, mark l. Ruffle and don’t miss the adorable and inscrutable philosopher therapist Kemptrup
